Ship Detection at Sea
WWF Germany is working with the German Aerospace Center (DLR) to use certain satellites to detect ships in priority marine ecoregions and remote areas. Those satellites can “see” boats at night, or even in cloudy conditions, which is helping WWF identify boat presence, movements, potential impacts and illegal activities.
WWF is developing pilot projects in open seas as well as near shore areas to answer specific questions.
- How many boats are in this area at the same time?
- Are boats fishing illegally?
- What are the potential impacts of transiting cargo ships?
- Are we able to identify different fishing activities?
